An Update On the Camping Plans

Good morning everyone!

My apologies for not posting last Tuesday, I was having a tough week and my usual Tuesday morning routine got forgotten.  I'm back in action now though!  Sadly I don't have much to report at the moment... I've just got back from vacation and I don't have much on the horizon at the moment.  I wasn't very strategic with spending my vacation time this year, and used a lot of it towards the front half of the year.  I've now found myself in this situation where I've only got 5 days of vacation to last me until the end of June.  Unfortunately that's not going to make for very exciting blogging over the next few months, but I'll do my best.  I've been in these travel doldrums before and managed to find inspiration for writing, I'm sure I can pull it off again.

For now I just wanted to give everyone an update on my proposed camping trip in May.  My decision to write about it again is only partially influenced by the fact that it's the only vacation I've got to look forward to for awhile so I'm looking WAY forward.  The other deciding factor was that it's still in it's formative stages, so if anyone is interested in coming along you can still speak up.

I'd mentioned before that you have to book very early in Killarney if you want to get a good campsite, but things seem to be functioning a bit out of the ordinary this year.  Dad's been handling the reservation process, but he said that the usual system for reserving a site is currently down and the reservations are being taken directly by the park.  He made a call earlier and was told that the campsites in channel between the mainland and Phillip Edward Island aren't actually very popular and don't need that much advance registration.  Also, it's apparently acceptable to just camp out on the island if you can't get the site you were looking for.  This has drastically reduced the urgency of the situation.

The only real concern at this point is booking a place to stay in Killarney when we're not camping, and there's even some debate surrounding that.  Given my lack of available vacation days we're looking at going up for the Victoria Day long weekend in May, and possibly skipping the stop at KML either at the beginning or end of the trip so that I don't have to use as much vacation time.  There's still some debate surrounding that.

The moral of the story today is that this trip is still malleable, but probably not for long.  Any desire to participate can be entertained, but should probably be brought forward at your nearest convenience.

Well, I'm off to work.  I hope you are all doing well and I'll talk to you all again next week.

Two Days of Vegas

Good evening everyone!  Sorry for missing the post yesterday, but I got in pretty late, so I'll have to catch you all up for the past two days.

I started out yesterday pretty mellow.  I actually took the time to hook up my tripod for my camera to stabilize enough to get a decent low-light shot and took some pictures of the inside of my hotel.  Here's a shot from the balcony outside my room, looking across to the rooms on the far side of the pyramid:

Once we had all really got moving yesterday morning we went for a walk South on Las Vegas Blvd.  It's not really The Strip beyond where we are, and it quickly turned in to smaller hotels and shopping centres, but we managed to get a bit of shopping done, had some lunch, and took a picture with a replica of the iconic "Welcome To Las Vegas" sign:

They've got the setup right in the middle of the road with its own little parking area, and a space where goofy tourists like myself can take a nice picture.

We ended up spending a fairly significant portion of the day walking around, and were pretty tired when we got back to our hotel.  We just chilled out in the casino for what little remained of the afternoon before heading out for the real highlight of the day: Penn & Teller.  We made our way to the Rio Hotel, had a little snack there since we didn't feel like dinner, and then took our seats for the show.  We then promptly vacated our seats because they let the audience members play around up on stage with a couple props for the show.  I thought that was pretty awesome to be allowed on stage.  The whole time we were up there Penn was on a stand-up bass accompanying a pianist in a pre-show jazz act.  It was pretty sweet.

What turned out to be even better was that my trip up on stage before the show turned out to be the first of two ventures up there, as early into the show Penn pulled me out of the audience to assist in the act.  Obviously I was thrilled to be up there, and I wish I'd been able to get a picture of it.  I still got a great souvenir, since the bit was about airline security, and they were promoting a metal card they sell with the American Bill of Rights printed on it.  They are encouraging everyone to buy one and carry it through the metal detectors at airports.  I was playing the role of TSA security in their show and had one of the metal-detecting wands to search Penn and Teller.  When I found the card on Penn he let me keep it, and the guys even signed it for me after the show.  As much as I appreciate and understand why they want people carrying these cards through the airport (the 4th amendment, detailing the right against unwarranted search and seizure is highlighted) I don't think I'll have mine on me when I go home tomorrow.  I understand the principle, but have no intention of antagonizing foreign security personnel.

The rest of the show was phenomenal, and I was really happy that we had such great seats for it.

When we left the Rio we decided to catch a cab North up to Freemont St.  There's a pedestrian shopping area on Freemont that is covered in a massive domed roof, and at night they use it to put on a terrific light show.  It was hard to capture, but I did get some good photos of it:

It's hard to tell from this shot, but I'm actually looking up and that's all playing on the ceiling above me.  It's a brief show, but very cool.  If you're ever in Vegas you should check it out, but just remember that it only plays once an hour, on the hour, and probably only lasts about 10-15 minutes, so it's good to try to time your arrival about 5 minutes before the hour.

We were just a bit late for the 11:00 show due to the timing of when we got out of Penn & Teller's show, so we ended up catching the midnight light show.  It was pretty late when we got in, which is why I didn't take the time to make a blog entry last night.

This morning we got up, had some breakfast and headed right for Dream Car Rentals to pick up the Mustang I'd booked for us:

Red.  Yeah.  Sweet.

I was thinking of something a little more exotic, but I had to get something that could accommodate three adults, which was limiting, and eventually decided that I couldn't argue with the cheap price of the Mustang.  We opted to just have me drive, which turned out to be a really good thing since the car was a manual transmission, and I'm the only one of the three of us who could drive it anyway.  That worked for me though since standard is a lot more fun!

We headed out to Red Rock Canyon and stopped at the first parking area to take some photos and go for a hike.  It was a gorgeous hike, but we didn't get too far since all of us were feeling a bit tired of walking after spending the bulk of yesterday on our feet.  Still, we got in a good hike and got some great photos.  I'll just throw a few of them up here for your enjoyment:

That's actually looking back towards Vegas.

After that I was just driving through the park... probably a little quicker that is strictly allow if one were to take the posted speed limits too literally.  I hate to be too literal in my interpretations of these things.  Also, Mustang.

After I'd put a massive grin on my face and either terrified or nauseated my stalwart companions we headed back in to town for lunch.  It occurred to us at this point that we hadn't really made any other plans for the rest of the day, and still had the car for the whole afternoon.  We therefore made the last-minute decision to head out to the Hoover Dam, since it's less than an hour's drive, and it's a fairly significant monument in this region.  The drive was smooth, and I'm glad we went out there since it was really cool to see the dam:

We had a pleasant drive back into town from there and got ourselves some dinner, and chilled out in the room for a bit.  At around 8:00 we made our way over to the Bellagio Hotel to see the fountain show.  The huge pool in front of the hotel erupts in an elaborate display of fountains every half an hour through the day, and once every 15 minutes after 8:00 p.m.  It's supposed to much better at night, so we decided to wait until after 8:00 to see it.  I imagine that it's pretty neat at any time of day, but the show at night really is spectacular.  It was hard to capture a real sense of how cool it is, but I tried:

In case you were wondering, the Paris Hotel is across the street from the Bellagio.  Fun fact.

We're back at The Luxor now, the guys are down at the slots while I'm writing this, and I'll probably go join them shortly.  We'll just quietly wrap up our last evening here in that manner, and then it's back to Toronto tomorrow morning.  We'll be flying out of here at 12:30 local time, and thanks to the time difference it will be about 7:30 p.m. in Toronto when we land.  I'll try to make a quick post when I get in tomorrow to let you all know how I'm doing.

As for Vegas, it's been an absolute blast and I've had a great time here.  I haven't quite wrapped things up here yet, but I think it's just about time to start looking forward to whatever comes next...

Around Vegas

Another day in Vegas has come and gone, and I manage to still be in full health.  Clearly I'm not vacationing hard enough over here.

It was a great day over here, although I really don't have too much to tell since the day essentially boiled down to a whole lot of wandering around.  The Strip is just such a fascinating place to be that we wasted away an entire day just walking around taking it all in.  Actually, I shouldn't say "wasted" since it really was an excellent way to spend the day.  In fact, we might do a slight repeat of the day tomorrow since we're still feeling like we've scratched the surface.  So many of the hotels are connected, either through tunnels, walkways, or by the monorail that runs a significant length of The Strip.  Combine that with the fact that each hotel is such a MASSIVE structure and you can walk around for quite awhile without ever managing to find the outside world.  Given the subdued lighting and lack of windows I can see how easy it would be to lose track of time in the casinos.

That reminds me actually - I finally gambled!  I completely forgot to so much as put a quarter into a slot machine yesterday.  I'm not much of a gambler, but I am in Las Vegas, so I thought that I should make an attempt at some gambling.  We were on our way out of the hotel today and passed by one of the giant $1 slot machines, so I gave it a pull just to say I'd gambled before we proceeded with our day.

As we passed through the MGM Grand we happened to stumble upon the entrance to the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and I just had to get a picture there since so many of the UFC fights take place there.  I would have loved to be able to actually see the arena, but at least I got a picture with the sign:

Another cool hotel that we ended up in was the Venetian.  There was one stretch that was completely indoors but had a very convincing sky painted onto the ceiling:

I'm afraid that the photo doesn't really do it justice, but the subtle lighting gave the whole thing a very realistic effect.  I actually found it a bit unnerving walking under the fake sky; as I moved while looking forward it seemed like the clouds were rushing past quicker that normal in my peripheral vision, and it gave the illusion of a rapidly spinning sky.  I had to spend a lot of time looking at the ceiling to convince myself that it was, in fact, not moving.

While we were out and about I was taking photos of the city, and when we went back out for dinner tonight I took a few photos of the same areas to compare.  Here's a few that I liked:

We were actually heading to the replica of the Eiffel Tower that you see glowing in the background there, but when we got there we found a line-up for the buffet that extended WELL outside of the restaurant and down the hall, so we didn't end up having dinner there.  Here's another day-night shot of our hotel:

The funny glow around the edges of the pyramid is actually caused by a lot of lights that are constantly running up the sides, but it appears as a solid line because my shutter stayed open so late.  I liked the effect though.

I got a pretty good night shot of Excalibur, largely because it's so bright at night that the photo actually turned out okay.

Tomorrow we'll likely continue our adventures around the city.  We've got tickets to go see Penn & Teller in the evening though, so that will be a ton of fun.  On Tuesday we've got a car reserved and we're going to head out to Red Rock Canyon for some driving fun and a bit of hiking.

I think I'll go pass what little remains of the evening in the proper Vegas manner: playing some slot machines.  I've got to put more than just a dollar in there at some point.  I hope you're all doing very well, and I'll talk to you all again tomorrow.

In Las Vegas... No Fear or Loathing Yet

Howdy everyone!  I hope my previous mobile post wasn't too terribly distressing for anyone, but I'm happy to report that I'm alive and well in Las Vegas.  The weather in Toronto really threw us a curveball this morning, but we got here okay.  Better late than never!  It was snowing fairly aggressively this morning, and by the time we got checked in, through security and to our gate it was starting to look nasty:

We ended up getting on the plane an hour after we should have departed, and then had to wait for de-icing.  In the end we got de-iced and onto the runway, but took off 2.5 hours later than we should have.  It was a frustrating delay, but at least we made it without further incident to Las Vegas.

It's really beautiful weather here today.  Of course you can't count on having nice weather in Las Vegas in January, but we seem to have lucked out.  Granted, 14 degrees Celsius isn't exactly beach weather, but after what we've had in Toronto it feels like August here!  It's sunny and (relatively) warm.

It's amazing to see Vegas again.  I was so young the last time I was here, and I really didn't come away with a very clear impression of the place.  What's become very clear to me today is that everything here is MASSIVE!  The sheer scale of all the hotels on The Strip is phenomenal.  It's like every undertaking in this city is on a completely different level from anywhere else in the world.  I managed to get a quick picture of my hotel through the shuttle bus window on our way here.  I am actually writing from a room near the top of the pyramid you can see slightly left of centre in this photo:

I've actually had a difficult time getting good photos of the hotel.  It's an incredible structure, and includes what I've been informed is the world's largest atrium.  The term "world's largest" seems to be the ultimate goal of all things in Vegas.  Unfortunately the dim casino lighting, combined with massive open spaces doesn't make for very good photography with a simple point and shoot camera.  Most of my photos have come out either dark, blurry, or both.

I'm loving the Egyptian theme of this hotel, and the lengths they go to in order to maintain the theme:

I really, really wish I'd been able to get a decent photo of the view from the hallway outside of my room.  We're staying in the pyramid, and all of the rooms are lined on the outside of the pyramid, so every hallway has a view out into the centre of the pyramid with the illusion that there's nothing below you until you hit the main floor.  I may make another attempt to photograph the atrium using my tripod to get a decent shot.

The view outside was equally stunning though:

We're getting a beautiful view to the south, though I almost wish that our room was on the other side of the pyramid so that we could get that view out over The Strip.

We've spent a bit of time today just trying to get settled in, but with only a few days to play around in the city we wanted to make sure we got out there and had some kicks this evening.  We had a fairly early dinner, having not yet adjusted to the timezone difference, and then proceeded to The Gun Store.  For those of you who aren't familiar with The Gun Store, it's a (as the name implies) gun store here in Las Vegas, but what makes it special is that they have a huge gun range with a wide selection of weapons available for rental.  They employ a large staff to supervise tourists like us who just want to come out and play with a gun that we wouldn't normally get the opportunity to use back home.  So, given the lack of availability of guns in Canada, this was an exciting chance for us to do something really unique.

They offer package deals for people who want to try to shoot a gun, but don't know what they want.  However, they will let you put together your own package, which is the route I took:

The selected firearms are as follows: H&K G36 (as seen in a videogame I used to play,) H&K MP5 (just a classic machine gun featured in many movies,) Walther P99 (the most recent choice of weapon for James Bond,) and the PS90 (as seen in sci-fi TV show Stargate: SG1.)

I started with the pistol, moved on to the G36, then the MP5, and finished with the PS90.  I don't know if it was just a bit of practice, or if the PS90 is just an incredibly easy gun to fire, but I did really well on my last round with that.  I was firing at a target with a life-sized torso silhouette, surrounded by several smaller silhouettes which were smaller than my hand.  After I did well firing at the main target with my first 10 rounds the range instructor who was monitoring us challenged me to fire at one of the small ones, and even said that if I could hit one in the head he'd give me another 10 rounds for free.  Please keep in mind that at this range I can barely make out the head from the chest, but here's how I did:

So yeah, I ALMOST got it with that neck shot, but no clear headshots in there.  Still, I was pretty pleased with myself for getting all but one shot on the target.

What was really funny was that after we left I actually found a spent .223 shell casing in my pocket.  I was getting showered with the things at various points in the evening.  I really want to keep it as a souvenir, but I'd be afraid to even put it in my checked baggage when heading home.

Needless to say I had a BLAST at the range tonight.  It's the first time I've ever held a firearm, and it's not unreasonable to suggest that it will be my last, but I had a great time while I was at it.

So, it's been a fairly eventful day, especially given that such a large portion of it was spent in transit.  I'm probably not going to last too much longer tonight, even though I still haven't even gambled a single quarter the whole time I've been here.  It's been a long day and I'm feeling pretty worn out.  Still, I'm looking forward to getting a good rest tonight and really getting in to things tomorrow.

I hope you're all doing well, and I'll check in again tomorrow night.

Mobile Posting #20110108

Well, I'm at Pearson at the moment, getting ready to go... and I can't see out the window of the airport because it's a total whiteout. Haven't heard anything regarding delayed flights, but I can't say I'd be surprised at this point. As the snow continues to fall I'm just hoping to get out of here quickly before we get grounded.

Okay, the phone is getting turned off and I'm getting ready to go. Hoping for the best.

Another Flight Approaches!

Good morning everyone!  My apologies for missing last Tuesday, but it was a busy holiday season... the bulk of which I was very, very sick for.  I'm back in action now though, and while I don't normally recommend the flu as a weight-loss method, I'm carrying around 5 less pounds with me.

I don't have much to report this week.  I spent the weekend at home with friends and family which was awesome!  Unfortunately I was still recovering from my bout with the flu and I don't think I was my usual lively self.

The big news right now is actually what's coming up.  For those of you that don't mark my vacation schedule on your calendars (for shame) this weekend is my big Boys Night Out in Las Vegas!  Woohoo!  So far the plans are holding steady at visiting a shooting range, seeing Penn & Teller, and hiking in the desert.  Beyond that we've kept things fairly open so that we've got just enough flexibility in this vacation.  Right now I'm just pumped to get the party started!  As always I will have my trusty netbook with me, so expect as many updates as I can manage.  I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunity to write, it's just that the code of "What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas" may prove restrictive from a literary perspective.

I apologize again everyone, I didn't give you a post last week, and this one is going to be short and uneventful, but right now I've just got Vegas on the brain.  We fly out Saturday, so as per my usual M.O. you can expect an update Saturday night.  For those of you who are here in Ontario please remember that Vegas is on Pacific time, so that Saturday night post will likely be coming in pretty late for you.  Fortunately I should have something to say at that point!  Until then, be well my friends!
